Statement on lifting of COVID-19 restrictions

The New Brunswick Medical Society supports the provincial government’s plan to begin phasing out COVID-19 restrictions as we emerge from the worst of this Omicron wave of the pandemic.

We are cautiously optimistic that the downward trend we are seeing in hospitalizations will continue in the coming weeks, and that any subsequent surge will be manageable. We look forward to resuming normal operations in our hospitals and rescheduling previously cancelled procedures and surgeries. We have learned a great deal over the course of the pandemic, and incorporated new measures and tools, such as virtual care, making us better equipped to move forward at this time.

However, even with the easing of restrictions, we need to remain vigilant to protect the health system. We ask that everyone continue to do what they can to mitigate the spread of the virus. The best means of avoiding serious outcomes if one does contract COVID-19 is vaccination, so we encourage all eligible individuals to make sure they are up to date with first, second and booster doses.

We appreciate the efforts of New Brunswickers who have done their part to follow public health guidelines and get us to this point. It has been a difficult two years and the past couple months have proven especially challenging, so we look forward to gradually transitioning back to a new normal together.
