SIRT To Review Police Actions Involving Man In Custody

New Brunswick RCMP has asked the Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) to review police actions during the transportation of an individual in custody.

Mounties say members of Codiac RCMP arrested a 51-year-old man under the Intoxicated Person Detention Act (IPDA) on June 29th.

At the time, the cells at the Codiac detachment were closed so members transported the man to the Shediac RCMP detachment.

Police described the man as agitated and aggressive and he was placed in handcuffs and leg cuffs.

While being moved to the cell area, an altercation ensued between the man and four RCMP members.

One member suffered a non life-threatening injury.

No one else was injured.

Following further review, New Brunswick RCMP has referred the incident to SIRT for an independent investigation.

One member has been placed on administrative duties pending the outcome of the review.
